Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders Institute Home | Research Programs | Who's Who | Annual Conference | Education & Dissemination The BASIS Through funding from the National Center for Responsible Gaming, The Institute supports the Brief Addiction Science Information Source (BASIS), an online resource for the latest in scientific research on the addictive disorders. Every week the BASIS publishes one of the following critical reviews: WAGER (Worldwide Addiction Gambling Education Report); DRAM (Drinking Report for Addiction Medicine), ASHES (Addiction Smoking Health Education Service); STASH (Science Threads on Addiction, Substance Use and Health); and Addictions and the Humanities. The BASIS also offers free access to other addiction resources including the online version of “Your First Step to Change,” self-help guides for people who are thinking about changing their gambling behavior or alcohol use. Annual NCRG Conference and Gambling Addiction The Institute cosponsors, with the National Center for Responsible Gaming, the annual NCRG Conference on Gambling and Addiction in Las Vegas. Facing the Odds: The Mathematics of Gambling and Other Risks Facing the Odds is a middle-school curriculum on probability, statistics and mathematics developed by Harvard Medical School Division on Addictions and the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling with support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It was designed to enhance students' critical thinking, number sense and knowledge of mathematics of gambling so that they can develop rational views about gambling and make their own informed choices when confronted with gambling opportunities.
